Things to do with Ella Trails
Ella combines the best of Sri Lanka in one place. Nature, hiking, waterfalls, and unforgettable views. Highlights include Little Adam’s Peak, Ella Rock, Nine Arches Bridge, and one of the world’s most scenic train journeys through tea estates and tropical forests. While Ella town is small and lively, the surrounding hills offer peaceful stays with panoramic valley views, from budget guesthouses to luxury boutique hotels.
Little Adam’s Peak
Mini Adam’s Peak is the easiest and most accessible hike in Ella, making it perfect for all age groups. The entrance is about a 15-minute walk from Ella town along the Passara Road, just after the Flower Garden Resort at a sharp bend. It is also known as Punchi Siri Pada or Small Adam’s Peak, which often confuses visitors. The well-paved trail takes around 30–45 minutes to reach the 1,141-meter summit. Hikers are rewarded with stunning 360-degree views of tea plantations, valleys, and floating clouds. Early morning or late afternoon hikes are best for cooler weather and breathtaking scenery.
Nine Arch Bridge
The Nine Arch Bridge is Ella’s most famous landmark and a masterpiece of colonial railway engineering. Located about 2 km from Ella town, the bridge is easily reached by walking through lush jungle paths or tea estates. Built entirely of stone, brick, and cement, it stands proudly between Ella and Demodara stations. Watching a train pass over the bridge is a must-do experience, especially in the morning or late afternoon. Surrounded by dense greenery, the bridge is one of the most photographed spots in Sri Lanka.
Ella Rock
Ella Rock is a challenging hike suited for adventure lovers seeking panoramic views and a sense of achievement. The trail starts near the Ella railway tracks and winds through forests, tea plantations, and rocky paths. The hike usually takes 3–4 hours round trip, depending on pace and route. From the summit, travelers enjoy sweeping views of Ella Gap, Little Adam’s Peak, and surrounding mountains. Starting early in the morning is recommended to avoid heat, crowds, and mist.
Ravana Waterfalls
Ravana Waterfalls is one of the widest and most powerful waterfalls in Sri Lanka, located just a few minutes’ drive from Ella town on the Wellawaya Road. The falls are closely linked to the legend of King Ravana from the Ramayana. Water cascades down multiple rock tiers, creating a dramatic and scenic view, especially during the rainy season. Visitors can relax near the base, but swimming is not recommended due to strong currents. The waterfall is easily accessible by taxi or tuk-tuk.
Demodara Loop
The Demodara Loop is an impressive railway engineering feat where the train loops under itself before reaching Demodara Station. Located about 5 km from Ella, this unique loop can be viewed from nearby hills or experienced by taking the scenic train ride. The surrounding landscape of tea estates and valleys adds to the charm. It is a fascinating stop for railway enthusiasts and photographers.

Early morning visits are ideal for clear views before clouds roll in.

Ravana Cave
Ravana Cave is a historic and mythological site believed to be part of King Ravana’s underground tunnel system. Located near Ravana Falls, visitors must climb a steep set of steps to reach the cave entrance. Inside, the cave extends deep into the rock, creating a mysterious atmosphere. It is an exciting stop for those interested in legends, archaeology, and adventure.

We booked the trip to Ella, we needed few changes due to traveling with kid. All has been managed well, driver was great, car seat available. Even thought the weather was bad, guide was trying to get us where we wanted, rented a tuk tuk or making some other changes, or even simple borrowing an umbrellas. Would recommend them for Ella tour for sure. JiriVerified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
